As we selected a data range before getting started, we now need to precise to MapInXL which columns contain the data we want to use on the map, and their exact role : the type of each column.
The data wizard window displays the different colums and the first rows of your selected range.
As our data have a header row, begin by checking the "My data have a header row" box. This will help MapInXL to give automatically a name to your different data.
On the top, a row of comboboxes allows you to select the type of each column in order to precise their role:
MapInXL needs to create a link between the rows of your data range and the states on the boundaries map. Every boundaries map in MapInXL possesses identifiers codes and names attached to their geographical objects (states, counties, countries, etc.). If your data rows contain the same Identifier and/or names, MapInXL will then be able to match them with their corresponding geographicals objects.
MapInXL will automatically recognize the column that contains the states names ("NAME" column), so you do not need to precise it in this tutorial.
As we want to represent the number of customers with proportional symbols select "Symbol numeric data" in the combobox of the "CUSTOMERS" column. In this scenario, only one "Symbol numeric data" can be used, so be sure to verify that no other colums than "CUSTOMERS" has already been automatically selected as the "Symbol numeric data", and select "Ignore" for the unused columns.
To indicate to MapInXL that we want to use the customers rate to fill the states with a color gradient, select "Fill numeric data" in the combobox of the "CUSTOMERS RATE" column. In this scenario, only one "Fill numeric data" can be used, so be sure to verify that no other colums than "CUSTOMERS RATE" has already been automatically selected as the "Fill numeric data", and select "Ignore" for the unused columns.
You can now click the "Next" button to view a summary of your choices:
Then click the "finish" button to display the map:
MapInXL will display a basic version of your map: you are now ready to edit the different elements of this basic map to finalize his presentation.
