Rule #1 : Use the right map
Make sure the identifiers of your data can match the identifiers of the map.
You can use zip code information with a county map but you can never use county information with a zip code map.
Rule #2 : Use the right view
You don’t display numerical values (the number of women) the way you display rates (the % of women among the population).
For the 1st one, use symbols, and for the 2nd, use shaded areas.
Rule #3 : Don’t overload your map
You don’t need to use the 5-digit ZCTA base map when working for the entire USA. It won’t be legible.
The 3-digit zip code base map is detailed yet clear enough for you to see and understand your data.
